Coming from countries like Austria or Germany I was used to postcodes describing whole districts, villages and even smaller towns. That's different in the UK where postcodes have been introduced to locate single streets or even houses. That's grand when spinning this thought out!
Google me: SW6 2UL. Yes, that guy on this amazing terrace, that's me! Now just type my postcode into your phone (whatever it is) and come over for a coffee.
A postcode can tell even more, that I'm an 'Urban cool' for instance. Yes, that's true, everybody knows that SW6 2UL's are urban cool! We are 'successful city dwellers owning or renting expensive flats in trendy inner urban locations'. I can confirm that my flat costs me an awful lot of money every month. But it's got a massive terrace, that's great, isn't it? We SW6 2UL's are well educated, professionals in creative jobs, are working long hours and have high incomes (I do believe that the latter isn't the case for me). We are in our late 30s or early 40s, have some young children, love diversity and like to live close to cities, preferably close to London (Yes, that's true, apart from the age band....). And we are either Hugo, Tamara, Bernard or Patricia (actually none of them, but anyway). That's what we SW6 2UL's are. And even more. As we are living in this new-posh urban district we know how to speak urban. We know what airport vultures and corn packers (the Iowan ones) are. We have our GTL places near where we live and we certainly know how to avoid cubicle coma. We understand how to to pick out the corn of someone's shit and etm (cf. http://www.urbandictionary.com/).
We are urban cool! And all this because of our postcode.
